11th September

Woke this morning to find myself halfway up the starboard side of Zuma, she's heeled over a almost 30 degrees at times.

I don't think I have ever experienced winds and rain like this, its relentless and they say Monday and now Tuesday are going to get worse.

Zuma's getting an unfair slapping, thankfully I am not on a mooring as two boats have broken free already and are on the beach.

Thankfully I re-sealed the windows so she's keeping me dry, Im going back under the douvet with ear plugs in.

  1. Your yacht is fairly small and you have a high wind loading high on the mast. It is normal in hurricanes to remove 'all' sails from both the boom and un-furl and totally remove your Genoa.

The weight of a wet Genoa all the way to the top of the mast creates a very high C of G and needs to be removed. This is important!!

Also your pontoon side fenders (probably hanging down using only one rope? Mount these horizontal with a tie at both ends this will allow the fender to 'roll' up and down the pontoon during strong gusts and will carry the load and weight of Zuma as she presses hard into the pontoon. In the vertical position, they just get squashed flat in the middle and look like Madonna in a corset.

Remove the Genoa ASAP! Remove the Main (or drop the boom) as a secondary consideration but do it.

Best of luck David [S/Y "Surabaya Girl"]
